Brynn King, a fifth-year athlete competing at Roberts Wesleyan University in New York and the NCAA Division 2 indoor women's pole vault record holder at 14-7.50 (4.46m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the strong start to her Redhawks' career, achieving the four best indoor performances in NCAA Division 2 history and ranking No. 2 overall among collegiate female competitors, in addition to No. 6 in the U.S. and top 15 in the world. King, a Duke transfer, reflects on her time with the Blue Devils' program and how she got connected with the Roberts Wesleyan program through the transfer portal. She explains how significant it has been to have the opportunity to train with coaches Jenn Suhr and Chris Brhel, and how meaningful it is to have two years of collegiate eligibility remaining as a result of an ACL injury and the COVID-19 pandemic. King revisits her first career 14-foot clearance during the summer after redshirting the outdoor season at Duke, and how that breakthrough performance provided confidence for her following her arrival at Roberts Wesleyan. She analyzes how profound it was to have the impact of eclipsing the 2009 Division 2 indoor record of 14-5.25 (4.40m) established by Katelin Rains of Minnesota State by clearing 14-5.50 (4.41m) in her first meet representing Roberts Wesleyan on Dec. 1 at the Akron Haynes Lancaster Open in Ohio. King also speaks about the unique opportunity to travel to the University of Toronto to compete Jan. 6 at the Sharon Anderson Memorial against Canadian indoor and outdoor record holder Alysha Newman and produce a 14-7.25 (4.45m) clearance to win the event. She also analyzes her efficiency and consistency at her opening heights, which have now surpassed her previous personal-best clearances during her tenure at Duke. King shares the confidence gained from achieving a 15-1 (4.60m) bar clearance in practice and how she is motivated to translate that effort into competition in the coming weeks in an attempt to surpass the absolute Division 2 record of 14-9 (4.50m) achieved in 2014 Grand Valley State's Kristen (Hixson) Leland. She looks forward to a season-ending stretch to the indoor schedule of vaulting at the Feb. 9-10 meet at Grand Valley State in Michigan, plus the East Coast Conference Championship on Feb. 18, as well as the NCAA Division 2 indoor final March 8-9 at Pittsburg State in Kansas, before shifting focus to outdoor goals, including the U.S. Olympic Trials in June at Hayward Field in Oregon.
